Welcome to the Homestead Blog Hop!

Brrrrrr!! Finally the bitter cold seems to be coming to an end and back to more normal winter temps. We recently had a scare with avian flu in our town. A fellow backyard farmer just down the street from us sadly lost her entire flock of nearly 100 mixed poultry after avian flu was discovered in her flock.

We took that warning seriously and put all of our birds in lockdown for almost two weeks. Sunday we decided it was all clear and planned to let the birds out to free range again. Our chicken run has a human sized door for us to get in and a chicken sized door that allows the birds to come in and out but keeps out the alpacas & goats. We used a concrete block to keep the chicken sized door closed during lock down. The block froze to the ground so we still couldn’t let the birds out! But this morning temps finally allowed us to knock the block loose and let the birds out. They were super excited to be able to free range the yard again. I hope you all enjoy the temporary relief from winter, we are far from spring here in New England, but it’s nice to pretend for a few days!

Now on to the hop…..
